President Obama yesterday came out and said that some officials had failed to properly connect the dots when it came to the Christmas Day attempted terrorist attack (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/06/us/politics/06obama.html). Teh article continues on and states, "The tone of the president’s remarks on Tuesday — the sharpest of any of his statements since the incident nearly two weeks ago — underscored his anger over the lapses in intelligence as well as his efforts to minimize any political risks from his administration’s response."
But here is my problem with this. I think that President Obama needs to adopt a stance of, "The Buck Stops Here". What I mean is, how can President Obama get that hard nosed with people in his cabinet, and his chosen officials when President Obama himself said that we are not even involved with any war on terror.
"He didn't take personal responsibility for the problem, yet his administration's policy has been to pretend that the 30-year series of attacks by Islamic terrorists are isolated criminal acts.
According to Obama, we are not fighting a war on terror and his administration does not speak of Islamic jihadists or radical Islam." (http://www.dailybreeze.com/letters/ci_14129650)
And that right there is the nuts and bolts of why the system failed to prevent this "underwear Bomber" that tried to blow up a plane on Christmas Day.
There is even more evidence here, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano went on some TV shows and, "stressed the safety of air travel, and repeatedly said in an upbeat tone that "the system worked" and "everything happened that should have." (http://www.theatlanticwire.com/features/view/feature/Janet-Napolitano-The-System-Worked-519). I think she means that the passengers subdued the terrorist, and that passengers being alert and handling terrorist attempts is the system. The biggest problem here is that OBVIOUSLY the system did not work. This was a horrific failure of the system! If anything this showed how flawed the system is! In fact if not for the actions of some passengers, and maybe some bumbling on the part of the terrorist, we have another HUGE terrorist attack here on American soil. So if Napolitano thinks that how is how the system is supposed to work, why does she even still have a job? And this also reflects the bad decision making that the Obama administration is continually making when it comes to matters of security.
Perhaps the reason that no administrative action was taken against Napolitano is that on Monday she came out and made a statement where she admits that the aviation security system failed. One day the system is fine, the next it is broken, just like Washington! So perhaps, President Obama took no decisive action against Napolitano because she retracted her statement the next day and made it clear that the system was flawed (http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2009-12-28-Napolitano_N.htm). Anyone have some wet laundry? Because it looks like we are spinning things here. The icing on the cake here, of course, is how Napolitano retracted the statement, " A day after saying the system worked, Napolitano backtracked, saying her words had been taken out of context." (http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2009-12-28-Napolitano_N.htm). But how can President Obama come down hard on Napolitano when it took the President about a week and a half to release his statement? I guess waiting to long is just better than saying the system worked right?
Also keep in mind that there is no war on terror, at least we aren't calling it that. Some people speculate that President Obama made the change, but no matter who made the change, it has been made (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2009/03/23/the_end_of_the_global_war_on_t.html).
Long story short, if President Obama is really interested in investigating how this Christmas bombing almost took place, I would say he needs to do the following things:
1- Fire Napolitano right now. The fact that she came out publicly and made a statement that the system works is grounds enough for her termination. In fact her statement almost demands her termination. If you have someone that clueless running a government agency that reflects back on you, and shows your leadership abilities. Be decisive and make a statement by firing someone who obviously is out of touch with her position.
2- Make a public statement that has a "make no bones about it" feeling that we are engaged in a Global War on Terror. Look the terrorists are at war with us, make no mistake about it, why they are at war with us, and we are just looking at Overseas man made contingencies is the exact same as saying nothing at all. If you are not bright enough to realize that terrorists are actively pursuing a war on us, and that to win we must launch a war on them, then you have no business running the country, or dictating the national Security.
3- Hold a meeting with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the CIA, the Secretary of State, Department of the interior, and the FBI as well as military intelligence. Lay it all out on the line. Demand that all agencies work together and share any and all information regarding terrorists. Any person suspected of being a terrorist never gets a visa, NEVER! And once a suspected terrorist applies for a visa you notify all other groups and inform them of what is happening.
My advice to President Obama is if you want to look into and investigate what went wrong, you may want to start by looking at yourself!
